Starting August 19th, Orion: Dino Horde will be free for an entire week on Valve's digital distribution portal. Spiral Game Studios sent out word that their prime-time first-person, dinosaur hunting, open-world shooter will be free for an entire week on Steam.
The original Orion: Dino Beatdown got off to a rocky start last year when it launched on Steam as an incomplete mess. YouTuber's drilled it further into the ground than a Texas oil company and reviewers scored it worse than an uneven fight featuring Manny Pacquiao against a one-armed cerebral palsy patient.
However, Spiral Games Studios didn't want to let the tough times burn them to the ground like a hillside forest in California during a torrid summer. The team has worked through the bad press and the game-breaking bugs to churn out a real winner in the sequel, Orion: Dino Horde.
The game has also been on the receiving end of quite bit of free DLC and additional promotions to help put the game in the public spotlight. The reality is that this low-budget gem is a great little shooter for gamers looking to log in some hours with their friends cooperatively shooting the mess out of dinosaurs and spiral wants to capitalize on that, which is why they're allowing any and everyone to play the game for free all week long starting next Monday.
As noted in the press release...
With this week-long event we will also be doing our second DoubleXP event to coincide. With the newly added Persistence system this will make for the best time to grind and level up all 3 of your classes. We will be releasing the Desert DLC Pack (free) next week to celebrate this event and the game series. This new DLC pack will add new modes, maps, our favorite weapon, 100+ steam achievements and the massive game version 1.9. Users will be able to enjoy all of this new content starting no later than Friday, August 23rd.
The game, in the meantime, will also be available for 75% off until Monday, August 26th, 10am PST.
You basically have plenty of time to play-test the game with your friends (or make some new ones) to see if it's a game you want to get in good with before laying any cash down for the title.
Now, I can't say that Orion: Dino Horde is perfect by any means. However, if you're looking for a simple shooter with all the basic functionality you've come to expect from modern shooters, you won't find yourself too disappointed with the offerings. There are a couple of maps, day and night cycles, a variety of vehicles to interact with and use, tons of weapon upgrades to utilize and plenty of character abilities to use, abuse and have fun with.
You can see the game in action with the trailer below or hit up the official website to learn more.
